When we think of Velociraptors, it's hard not to picture the towering, terrifying creatures that hunt in packs and open doors in Jurassic Park. But the real Velociraptors were far from Hollywood’s version! Instead of six-foot monsters, the actual Velociraptor was about the size of a turkey, standing only about two feet tall. They had feathers and looked more like a cross between a bird and a lizard, with a long, slender body perfect for agility rather than brute force.
In reality, Velociraptors were skilled hunters, but they didn’t have the level of intelligence or advanced social structures depicted in the movies. Their claws were sharp and deadly, but their hunting style was likely closer to that of modern-day hawks, using ambush tactics and precision strikes to catch prey. The terrifying intelligence and social behavior we see on screen are more fiction than fact – though it makes for a great story!
One of the biggest reasons for Hollywood's creative changes is that larger dinosaurs like Utahraptor didn’t fit their vision. These other raptor species could grow to six or seven feet tall and were more formidable in size, so Hollywood combined the names and traits of different raptors to create something more cinematic. In Jurassic Terrors, I dive into these unique traits to make the raptors as realistic as possible while keeping the thrills.
